Why Combat Mouth Breathing?

Is your child a noisy breather?

Do they often sleep with their mouth open, snore, or wake feeling tired? Do they struggle with concentration, seem unusually restless, or display hyperactivity? Have you noticed dark circles under their eyes, frequent colds, or difficulty focusing in class? These signs are often dismissed as “just how they are,” but in many cases, they indicate subtle issues with breathing.

Mouth breathing in children can quietly affect physical health, emotional wellbeing, and learning ability, and it’s something that can be gently addressed through targeted breathwork for children and methods like the Buteyko technique.

Mouth breathing changes how the body and brain function. Poor breathing habits can reduce oxygen delivery to the brain, affecting concentration, focus, and memory. They can disrupt sleep patterns, leading to daytime fatigue, irritability, and hyperactivity.

Over time, chronic mouth breathing can aggravate asthma, worsen snoring, and even contribute to sleep apnea. These silent symptoms often go unnoticed because children adapt to them, but the long-term consequences can impact learning, behaviour, and overall wellbeing.

How Breathwork Can Help

The Buteyko method is a gentle, scientifically-backed approach that encourages nasal breathing, optimises oxygen use, and supports a calmer nervous system. For a full overview of the science and research behind the Buteyko Method, I recommend the Buteyko Clinic's resources - you'll find them here.

Combined with simple breathwork exercises for children, it can help improve sleep, reduce hyperactivity, support emotional regulation, and enhance concentration. Even small, consistent daily practices — like mindful nasal breathing, gentle yoga sequences, or playful breathing games — can gradually retrain the way children breathe, replacing mouth breathing with healthier patterns.

My Journey Here

I’m a former preschool teacher turned yoga instructor and certified Buteyko breathing coach — and I’m also a mum. My own daughter’s early breathing struggles sparked my journey into understanding the profound impact of breath. Over the years, I’ve seen children transform from restless, tired, or irritable to calm, focused, and more energetic simply by learning to breathe properly. My experience combines classroom teaching, mindful yoga, and practical breathwork techniques for children — a holistic approach that works for both health and learning.

A Simple First Step

I share weekly insights on:

  • Typical breathing habits in children and what they mean

  • Gentle exercises to reduce mouth breathing and improve sleep, focus, and calm

  • How breathwork can help manage ADHD symptoms and support healthy development

  • Real-life examples from my work as a teacher, yoga instructor, and mum
